No matter what a persons reason for indulging in drug use is, it is a destructive lie. It is apart of that scene though. Sex, drugs, and music. It doesn’t matter what the genre is. I have told addicts of limited means that it was a good thing that they had no money because they would be dead if they had an unlimited supply. We know that drugs and alcohol completely distort your ability to discern. We know that people will do things when they are high or drunk that they would never do when they are sober. When musicians are using drugs and making music they are known as functional users. They are actually working, even though addicted, and making money. It's hard to comprehend that description isn’t it? A functioning addict? But the fact is they are not functioning. We see the devastating effects of that lifestyle and those choices. Many musicians have died because of drug overdoses. If people who recover from drug and alcohol abuse have a better quality of life and their job performance is also better as a result of sobriety, why wouldn’t that also pertain to a musician?
The real tragedy is that they are famous and very influential and our young people want to be just like them. They do not need these substances to make music. Those are gifts, talents, and abilities given to them by God. Drugs are destructive not constructive. What an unnecessary question. We can call a thing exactly what it is and still be politically correct. If being politically correct means we have to lie then we need to shut our mouths. Truth never goes out of style or season. It is the one prevailing force that people will always need. There are many destructive “habits” and lifestyles that we are accepting as correct today. If you don’t agree, don’t feel like you have to. You are still entitled to your own opinion. We push tolerance yet we don’t want to tolerate anyone who disagrees with the so called free love and lifestyles of society today. It is still that so called free love people but love has nothing to do with it. Does it look like the sexual revolution is over even though it has wrought mass destruction? I would have to say no. In 1971 we wanted abortion on demand because we wanted to have sex not babies. Nothing has changed, thousands of babies die everyday. We embrace pornography and the music videos are filled with it. What else would you call it? The drugs and sex aren’t enhancing anything but death and there is nothing sexy, glamorous, or appealing about that. Is your perception of right and wrong distorted because a twisted culture is dictating to you? The answers are not in the mass media, more sex, drugs, or politics. The answers we need are with God. How can the obvious destruction by you be ignored? You be sober and vigilant and go with God. Choose life not death and get high on the Most High.
I am sorry to hear about your lose. I to have had a numerous amounts of people that I know that have gotten addicted to drugs and alcohol. It’s a shame to see such talents wasted on foolish ideals like drugs. Music should be used to entertain and build up a person not to destroy them with foolish thinking. People like Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison all did except ally well in their musical careers but all subcommand to the use of Drugs. In our culture today more than ever drugs are a part of every day life. In California alone the use of Marijuana is being socially accepted by the mass media because of musical influences like Little Wayne and other nonsense rappers ruining or culture with crap. A lot of people now day s believe that sex , drugs and intensive use of violence is good for our culture and that its artistic to be immoral . The truth is that it’s not artistic to be immoral it just ruins lives the artist and more importantly the people who subjective them selves to the crap that they embrace. If people continue to let garbage in them self’s, than America is doomed for further failure.
ReplyDeleteRhonda, my deepest condolences on your loss. How very sad. My prayers go out to you, your family, the children left without a mother OR father, and your recovering cousin.
ReplyDeleteDrugs are definitely a part of every music genre. It is not just isolated to the rock world. And you are so right when you say that no matter what a person’s reasons or justifications for drug use, it is destructive, bottom line. I know of quite a few people that indulge in the wacky lettuce, thinking that it is not affecting their lives, their choices and their ability to function well. Yes, people will say and do things when they are high or drunk that they would never do when they are not under the influence of weed or alcohol. I have been in two relationships that ended, in part, due to the other person’s behavior when they were drunk. One was a functioning alcoholic, a subject you touched on in your blog. Over time, he went from being a functional alcoholic to a functional stoner. Having said that, your question about comprehending the description of someone who is functioning while working and making money is an important distinction. Are they really functioning? Not to the best of their ability, in my opinion. Wouldn’t it be interesting to do a study to see the creativity and performance of some musicians after they go through rehab and remain clean for a period of time. The statement in your blog “they do not need substances to make music” is so very true.
I am so sorry to hear of your lose. I really can’t imagine how you must feel. It sounds like you have a close relationship with God and I’m sure that is a true blessing to you. I have never lost anyone close to me with drugs or alcohol but I have seen first-hand the effects on family and friends. My own sisters ex-husband is a user and it is so unfortunate the amount of pain he has caused his family. From his children feeling neglected to his constant health problems, it seems like there really is no hope.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like no matter how many educational programs we have in place it really doesn’t prevent drug or alcohol abuse from happening. What is even more sad is the people that are using don’t respond to their loving family members once they are hooked and as you have witnessed leaves many of them behind once they pass. I really don’t know what to say but it takes a lot of courage to talk about your experience and I can only pray that through your pain someone can learn to get their life in order. There is an epidemic of young people dying and we as a public should really start deglamorizing drug use starting in the entertainment industry.
